Miner Shorts Bitcoin at $77,226 Into CPI: The Trade That Made Money for the Wrong Reason

CryptoAlpha

Hook

$77,226.

That's the entry Jiang Zhuoer — founder of the B.TOP mining pool — selected for a full-position BTC short, posted publicly in the dead hours before a US CPI print. When the disclosure surfaced, spot Bitcoin was trading at $78,730.74. Do the subtraction and you get a 1.95% paper loss on the headline leg.

Not a catastrophe. Not a margin call. Just a direction that refused to cooperate.

But here is the number worth staring at: the same disclosure showed two longs running green. ETH up 5.74%. BNC — the native token of the MASS network — up 0.51% on a deliberately small 5% allocation. Tally the book and it was marginally profitable. Remove the ETH leg and the entire thesis inverts.

That gap — between a public conclusion and a private P&L — is the actual news. Not the short. The asymmetry of how the short got told.

Context

Jiang Zhuoer is not a retail account with a handle. He runs B.TOP, one of the larger Chinese-origin mining pools, and he has spent years making public macro calls that move sentiment across Chinese-language crypto channels. When a pool operator speaks, the audience is not traders. It is miners deciding whether to hold freshly minted BTC or sell it into fiat to cover electricity.

That audience matters right now. PPI came in and shifted rate-cut odds meaningfully; the market repriced Fed expectations within minutes. CPI was sitting on the runway. Every desk in crypto was running the same playbook: hawkish print, risk-off, dollar up, BTC down.

Run the mechanics. PPI is upstream — producer prices feed into consumer prices with a lag. A hot PPI lifts the probability that CPI prints hot, which lifts the probability the Fed holds rates higher for longer, which lifts real yields, which pressures non-yielding assets. That chain is textbook and everyone knows it. What is less discussed is that the chain is priced in advance. By the time a trader is positioning for a hot CPI, the market has usually already skewed. Being right about CPI is not the same as being right about price — the second requires being right about how much CPI was already in the tape.

So when a miner with real operational exposure to Bitcoin's price announces a short, it reads as a tell. It says: even the people whose revenue is BTC think BTC is going lower.

Except that reading is lazy. And the tape — $78,730 against a $77,226 entry — is already arguing back.

Let me put my four-hour rule on this. In 2017, I broke a presale story on a whitepaper discrepancy inside 48 hours and watched presale volume drop 30%. The lesson was not that speed wins. It was that the first read of an event is almost always the wrong read, and the second read is where the money is.

Core

Here is the trade decomposed, because the sizing tells a story the headline does not.

Three legs. Leg one: full-position short BTC, entry $77,226, current mark $78,730.74, -1.95%. Leg two: full-position long ETH, +5.74%. Leg three: long BNC, 5% allocation, +0.51%.

Full position on the BTC short. Full position on the ETH long. Five percent on BNC.

That is not a market-neutral book. A genuinely hedged macro trade sizes the short and the long to cancel directional exposure — dollar-neutral, beta-neutral, whatever the constraint happens to be. This book has a full-size short and a full-size long stacked on top of each other. The direction is not neutralized. It is doubled and then pointed in two directions at once.

What that structure actually expresses is a relative view: BTC underperforms ETH over the window, and BNC is a cheap lottery ticket on something else entirely. The macro print is the trigger. The instrument selection is the thesis.

And the instrument selection is the part nobody quoted.

One more mechanical point, and it is the one that gets minimized. "Full position" is not a neutral descriptor. In margin environments, full position typically means the account's entire available capital is committed to a single directional leg. Two full positions on opposing instruments in the same book does not reduce that — it increases gross exposure while the net directional bet stays live. If the CPI print broke hard against the short, the long leg would have to outperform violently just to keep the book above water. That is leverage wearing the costume of a hedge.

Think about what a miner knows that a trader does not. A miner knows hashrate, knows the cost curve, knows which cohorts are selling. A miner does not know CPI. So why does the public framing lean on the macro print rather than on hashrate or the miner-margin spread?

Because macro is a universal language and miner economics are not. Macro travels. Miner data does not. That is chasing the alpha through the fog — the story everyone can read is never the story the position is actually about.

I learned this the hard way building DeFi dashboards in 2020 — mapping the liquidity veins of the DeFi ecosystem, tracking Compound collateral ratios in real time for a ten-thousand-member channel. The data that mattered was never the headline APY. It was the second-order flow: who was rotating, at what ratio, and what they were rotating out of. Public commentary follows the headline. Position sizing follows the real reason.

So: -1.95% on the short, +5.74% on the long, +0.51% on five percent of the book. The disclosed trade made money; the disclosed reason was, on the evidence available, wrong. That is a survivorship artifact, and it is the most instructive thing in the entire disclosure.

Then there is BNC. MASS network is a proof-of-capacity consensus project — small, low-liquidity, a five-percent sleeve. Whatever BNC did on the day, a 5% allocation in a thin book cannot rescue a full-size directional short. It is decorative. It exists to make the equity curve look diversified.

Full position, full position, five percent. That is the entire risk architecture, in three numbers.

Contrarian

The consensus read is going to be: even the miners are short. That is backwards.

The reflexivity runs the other way. When a known miner publishes a short into a binary macro event and the event fails to deliver the expected direction, the damage is not to his book — it is to the short thesis of everyone who copied the framing. A two percent gap between entry and spot is noise. But the narrative of miner capitulation is a signal that can now be partially falsified by the tape's non-response.

Second blind spot: nobody is asking why the ETH leg is full-size. If the macro thesis were genuinely hawkish CPI, risk-off, ETH does not escape it. ETH is high-beta to the same rate path. A hawkish print takes ETH down harder than BTC, not softer. The presence of a full-size ETH long inside a short-crypto-on-macro announcement is a structural contradiction, and the market is telling you which leg of the thesis the trader actually believed.

Third: the distance from entry to spot. $77,226 to $78,730.74 is roughly 2%. In a sideways tape, 2% sits inside the noise band. It is not a directional verdict and it is not a trend. What it is is a timestamp — an entry placed at a level the market has already declined to confirm.

Speed meets substance in the crypto wild west — and the substance here says the short was early, the long was the point, and the framing was packaging.

There is a fourth thread, and it has the longest half-life. Public P&L disclosure is a selection process. You publish the green screenshots. You do not publish the red ones. A single profitable multi-leg trade with a wrong directional leg is not evidence of edge; it is evidence of survivable wrongness, which is a different and much cheaper commodity. Without a trade history — win rate, average hold, maximum drawdown, Sharpe — the disclosed snapshot carries no statistical content. It is one coin flip, published because it landed right. Uncovering the silent signals before the pump is the whole job, and the silent signal here is not the short. It is that a miner chose to talk about a short while the long leg was doing the work. Commentary and capital pointed in different directions. When those two diverge, follow the capital.

Takeaway

What to watch, in order of signal density. B.TOP pool BTC reserve addresses come first — if miner-held balances at that pool start drifting down into strength, the short was never a macro trade. It was a treasury decision dressed as a macro trade. That is a fact you can verify, not a screenshot you have to trust.

Then Jiang's next disclosure. A single trade is anecdote. Three consecutive disclosures with stated entries and exits is a dataset. Until that exists, the correct prior on any KOL P&L post is unrepresentative until proven otherwise.

Then the ETH/BTC ratio around the CPI reaction. If ETH holds up on a hawkish print, the contradiction inside this book stops being an anomaly and starts being a positioning signal — where liquidity flows, value finds its home, and right now it is flowing somewhere other than Bitcoin.

The tape has not confirmed the short. It has not rejected it either. It is doing what a consolidation market does: separating the people with a thesis from the people with a screenshot. The next print decides which one Jiang was.
